Variance components and residual likelihood
The marginal likelihood based on residuals in a linear model is called the residual likelihood, sometimes abbreviated to REML. I will discuss the use of REML in a number of applications from animal behaviour, growth curves, agricultural field studies and environmental monitoring. All of these applications involve designs having several variance components, each associated with an independent source of variation such as temporal, spatial or other factors.
