Andrew Robinson is a historian who has written more than twenty-five books, including ‘Einstein: A Hundred Years of Relativity’, ‘The Last Man Who Knew Everything’, ‘Genius: A Very Short Introduction’ and ‘Einstein on the Run: How Britain Saved the World’s Greatest Scientist’. He also contributes regularly to newspapers and magazines. Einstein’s blackboard is the Oxford History of Science Museum’s most famous object. Yet it tells us relatively little of Einstein’s relationship with Oxford and Britain. British science inspired young Einstein’s physics; in 1919, British astronomers made him world famous; in 1933, Britain saved his life from Nazi death threats by offering him sanctuary – first in Oxford, then in rural Norfolk.
