Race and the Problem of the Public in Postwar America

Margaret Weir is John G. Winant Visiting Professor of American Government; Wilson Professor of International and Public Affairs and Political Science, Brown University

Margaret Weir’s research centers on social policy, poverty, and urban politics in the United States and Europe. She is the author and editor of several books, including Schooling for All: Race, Class and the Decline of the Democratic Ideal (authored with Ira Katznelson, 1986); The Politics of Social Policy in the United States (edited with Ann Shola Orloff and Theda Skocpol, 1988); Politics and Jobs: The Boundaries of Employment Policy in the United States (authored, 1992); The Social Divide: Political Parties and the Future of Activist Government (edited, 1998); and Who Gets What? The New Politics of Insecurity (edited with Frances Rosenbluth, forthcoming). Her current project is a book about the politics of spatial inequality in American metropolitan areas. She gained her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
