Cull of the Wild: Killing in the Name of Conservation
Get ready to kick off the 2024-25 OxMG Winter Seminar Series with our October talk!
Speaker: Hugh Warwick – author and ecologist with a particular passion for hedgehogs.
While Hugh has written three books about hedgehogs, is the spokesperson for the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and also helps run the Hedgehog Street campaign, he stresses that there is more to his life than these prickly mammals.
Title: Cull of the Wild – Killing in the Name of Conservation
Hugh’s latest book, Cull of the Wild, is a deep dive into some of the most contentious issues confronted by ecologists. Should we kill one species to save another? Depending on your audience, the answer is very simple and straightforward, but also often contradictory. This talk will explore some of the philosophical as well as ecological considerations at play. Sorry if this is a spoiler, there are no easy answers. But, there are ways we can do this an awful lot better!
