Since its inception in 2010, the Equality Act has received calls for reform while simultaneously been threatened as a result of post-Brexit EU equality policy, which could leave many workers stripped of their fundamental rights. In this timely talk titled “The Future of the Equality Act”, The Principal of Mansfield College, Helen Mountfield KC, will be in conversation with Melanie Field, Chief Executive of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), and Dr Suriyah Bi, Lecturer in Cultural Geography, and Founder of the Equality Act Review.

About Melanie Field:

Melanie Field is Chief Strategy and Policy Officer at the Equality and Human Rights Commission. She joined the Commission in 2014, following a Civil Service career in the justice and health sectors, and latterly specialising in equality and human rights policy. She led the development of significant advances in equality legislation, including outlawing sexual orientation discrimination in services and public functions and leading the creation and implementation of the Equality Act 2010, for which she was awarded the OBE in 2011. She steered the parliamentary passage and subsequent implementation of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013. At the Commission, her focus is on ensuring the organisation’s strategic direction, policy positions and priorities are clear, evidence-based, relevant and impactful, and that it has the capacity and culture to deliver exemplary work to drive further progress in Britain on equality and human rights.
