OCTF lunchtime seminar – all welcome
Edward Mitchard leads a research group working on developing and testing methods of using remote sensing data from satellite and drones to map the carbon stocks of tropical forests and savannas. He will discuss the different types of remote sensing data, and their strengths and weaknesses in mapping deforestation, degradation, regrowth and absolute carbon stocks. All these studies are based on field data, and we will give examples from field sites in Cameroon, Congo, Peru and Indonesia. He will also look to the future, discussing the new satellite missions to be launched in the next few years and what extra information they will give us about the tropical carbon cycle, and providing details on a new project just starting designed to map forest degradation across the tropics.
