HDRUK Oxford Monthly Community Meetings
HDRUK Oxford Monthly Community Meeting, Monday 4 November 2024, 2:00pm – 3:00pm

Speaker – Professor Philip Awadalla;
Title – Using Machine Learning, Population Cohorts and Healthcare Data to Capture the Earliest Determinants of Disease and Aging
Venue – Big Data Institute, Seminar room 0

Bio:
Philip Awadalla is the Professor of Molecular Genetics at the Nuffield Department of Population Health, as well as the Big Data Institute at the University of Oxford. Philip also serves as the National Scientific Director of CanPath (Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow’s Health). Previously, he was a Professor at the University of Toronto, and the University of Montreal Ste Justine Children’s Hospital where he was Director of the CARTaGENE cohort in Quebec. Philip and his team have expertise in population genomics, computational biology, and epidemiology. The research focus of his team is on healthy aging, early cancer detection, and the evolution of somatic mutations.

Abstract:
The integration of machine learning with deeply characterized population cohorts has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of disease onset and the aging process. By leveraging multi-omic datasets, health records, and longitudinal population studies, we can identify novel biomarkers and early determinants of chronic diseases, cancer, and age-related conditions. This presentation will outline a framework that combines AI and machine learning with data from large cohort studies to model the earliest molecular and environmental factors influencing disease and healthy aging trajectories. I will discuss how these models enable the identification of at-risk individuals and potential interventions long before clinical manifestations, paving the way for early detection and prevention strategies.
