Viral manipulation of autophagy for assembly and secretion
Flaviviruses are enveloped, positive-sense RNA viruses that hijack intracellular membranes to generate compartments for virion assembly and secretion. Autophagy is one such process that viruses routinely manipulate by diverting its physiological function to their own advantage. Lipid droplets are key organelles that reside at the interface of host immunity and infection. Autophagy-mediated lipid droplet degradation and its implications in progeny virion assembly and secretion will be discussed.
