Sexuality, Endogamy, and Caste in Colonial India

Oxford South Asian Society and Centre for Gender, Identity, and Subjectivity are delighted to invite you to a talk by Dr Durba Mitra, the author of the award-winning book, Indian Sex Life: Sexuality and the Colonial Origins of Modern Social Thought (Princeton UP, 2020).

Dr Mitra is the Richard B Wolf Associate Professor of Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality at Harvard University. Her work lies at the intersection of feminist and queer studies, and intellectual and social history.

Indian Sex Life charts how British authorities and Indian intellectuals developed ideas about deviant female sexuality to control and organize modern society in India. Dr Mitra will be speaking about her current project on sexuality in colonial India. The talk will be moderated by Nikita Arora, DPhil candidate in History, followed by audience question and answer.
