Book Launch and Panel Event
To discuss and celebrate the publication of Social Science: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford University Press) by Alexander Betts, a book launch and panel discussion will take place on 6th March at 4-6pm (BST) in-person at Pembroke College and in hybrid form on Zoom. The event is being organised in collaboration with the Social Sciences Division, the ESRC Grand Union Doctoral Training Partnership, and the Oxford SDG Impact Lab.
‘The Future of Social Science’
Social science is a vast, diverse, and contested field, and it is changing rapidly with the growing use of AI and machine learning, with increasing collaboration with the natural sciences and humanities, and with growing concern to make social science research more equitable and inclusive.
The panel will bring together some of Oxford’s leading thinkers to explore the future of social science, from a range of disciplinary perspectives. It will examine emerging trends and transformation in methods, theory, research impact, graduate training, and in relation to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Speakers will be:
Alexander Betts (moderator) – Professor of Forced Migration & International Affairs
Nandini Gooptu – Professor of South Asian Studies
Marnie Howlett – Lecturer in Russian and East European Politics
Lucie Cluver – Professor of Child and Family Social Work
Ben Ansell – Professor of Comparative Demographic Institutions
