After the Council of Trent, monasteries in Germany and Austria sought to exemplify the ideas of the Counter-Reformation through renewal of the monastic liturgy, including its music. Works by famous composers such as Lassus played a key role, but many monks also composed with great skill. This programme explores their creativity by tracing the life of a monk from acceptance into the cloister through to assuming the role of abbot and finally entering the heavenly kingdom.
