Dr Priya Atwal – Historian & Author
Priya is a historian and author focusing on empire, monarchy, and cultural politics. She is the University of Oxford’s Community History Fellow, where she obtained her doctorate and teaches. In 2020, Priya published Royals and Rebels: The Rise and Fall of the Sikh Empire with Hurst, chronicling the history of the men and women who forged the far-reaching Sikh Empire in a dramatic global era of fading dynasties and ambitious newcomers. Priya has appeared on various programmes and podcasts, including BBC Radio 4’s, Lies My Teacher Told Me, Princess and Sky History’s The Royal Mob. She has also acted as a historical consultant for organisations including the Historic Royal Palaces and the Royal Shakespeare Company and most recently, she was the historical consultant on the second series of Netflix’s hit series Bridgerton.
Danielle Burke – Art Historian, Fine Art Restoration Company
Danielle is the Lead Art Historian at Fine Art Restoration Company in Cumbria. Following an Art History degree at The University of York, Danielle worked in the film industry for several years as a cinema manager at Pinewood Studios and Curzon. She then ventured into the world of e-commerce before joining Fine Art Restoration Company in 2020. Danielle’s current role combines historical research with digital marketing, content creation and online sales, reflective of the company’s modern approach to a traditional sector.
Madeleine Kennedy – Independent Curator
Madeleine is an independent curator who has curated more than 25 exhibitions over the last ten years, including the major touring exhibition The Enchanted Interior. Until 2018 she was Keeper of Art at the Hatton Gallery, and has previous experience working in curatorial departments at Tate Britain, Laing Art Gallery and Firstsite, and with partners and clients including Arts Council Collection, National Portrait Gallery, Guildhall Art Gallery, Independent Curators International, MIMA, and Western Front Vancouver. She’s a trustee for the Art Fund, a selection panel member for Unlimited, and a Lecturer in Exhibition Studies at Liverpool John Moores University.
Alice Purkiss – Head of Heritage Partnerships, Oxford University
Alice is Head of Heritage Partnerships at Oxford University and leads a varied programme of research, training and events in collaboration with heritage partners to promote knowledge exchange and Public Engagement with Research. Alice is co-lead of the Oxford University Heritage Network, Fellow of Kellogg College and Trustee of The Heritage Alliance NGO. She is an Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, an awards judge for the Oxford Preservation Trust, and visiting lecturer for the Said Business School. She has a background in industry, with experience of working in major UK museums and small, private heritage organisations across research, curatorial and commercial roles.
Archie Williams, Cataloguer, Islamic and Indian Art and Rugs and Carpets, Christie’s, London
After graduating from Oxford University with an MPhil in Islamic Art and Architecture, Archie joined Christie’s London as a cataloguer across two departments: Islamic and Indian Art and Rugs and Carpets. Since then he has taken part in five sales, including the scholar Toby Falk’s collection of Indian paintings. He is currently preparing for the next sale in April, which will include an important collection of Turkish silk rugs.
