QTE: Politics and Prose in Kurdish Literature
To celebrate the English publication of The Last Pomegranate Tree by acclaimed Iraqi Kurdish novelist, Bachtyar Ali (Nelly Sachs Prize 2017 & Hilde-Domin Prize of the City of Heidelberg 2023), QTE is delighted to host a unique evening with Ali and translator Kareem Abdulrahman. The audience will participate in a Creative Translation Workshop using an extract from Ali’s novel. We will ask ourselves what unique challenges translators from Kurdish face, and whether literary translation is a means to put the Kurds, the largest minority group without their own nation state, on the world’s cultural map. Ali and Abdulrahman will be in discussion with translator and academic Professor Marilyn Booth (International Booker Prize 2019). You will have the opportunity to purchase a copy of The Last Pomegranate Tree and have it signed.
