We are delighted to invite you to our fourth event of Trinity 2022, which will take place on Tuesday, 17 May, in the Old Library at All Souls College at 8:30pm. As always, there will be a wine reception prior to the event, starting at 8pm. The speaker will be Dr. Peter Feaver, who will speak to us on the topic of ‘American Grand Strategy After Ukraine.’
Dr. Peter Feaver is currently serving as a Professor of Political Science and Public Policy at Duke University and as the Director of the Duke Program in American Grand Strategy. From June 2005 to July 2007, he served as Special Advisor for Strategic Planning and Institutional Reform on the National Security Council Staff at the White House where his responsibilities included the national security strategy, regional strategy reviews, and other political-military issues. From 1993 to 1994, Feaver served as Director for Defense Policy and Arms Control on the National Security Council at the White House where his responsibilities included the national security strategy review, counterproliferation policy, regional nuclear arms control, and other defense policy issues.
Professor Feaver was a visiting fellow at All Souls College and at Nuffield College last year, and his book Thanks for Your Service: The Causes and Consequences of Public Confidence in the Military will be published by the Oxford University Press in 2023. He is also the author of Armed Servants: Agency, Oversight, and Civil-Military Relations (2003) and Guarding the Guardians: Civilian Control of Nuclear Weapons in the United States (1992). He is co-author, with Christopher Gelpi and Jason Reifler, of Paying the Human Costs of War (2009) and, with Christopher Gelpi, of Choosing Your Battles: American Civil-Military Relations and the Use of Force (2004). He is co-editor, with Richard H. Kohn, of Soldiers and Civilians: The Civil-Military Gap and American National Security (2001). He has published numerous other monographs, scholarly articles, book chapters, and policy pieces on grand strategy, American foreign policy, public opinion, nuclear proliferation, civil-military relations, and cybersecurity.
Main access to the Old Library is via a steep staircase. Arrangements can be made for those with limited mobility to use a stairlift and a Fellow’s room to gain access. Please let us know at least one day in advance if you require this type of assistance. Capacity is limited so please arrive early.
We will be hosting a dinner with the speaker before the event. The dinner is at 6.15pm at Quod, 92-94 High St. If you would like to ballot for a spot, please email (secretary@oussg.uk) by Sunday evening. Those selected will receive an email the following day. Please note that dinner attendees are required to pay for their own consumption.
