SIU Workshop Sessions: Piloting a Successful Scientific Start-up
Do you have an amazing idea but no clue how to start working on it? Are you interested in learning more about translating science into real-world solutions? Learn how to maximize your chances of being a successful science entrepreneur!
Science and business approach the world with often conflicting perspectives. As a result, it is common that scientists wish to create successful start-ups but lack rigorous academic training in business entrepreneurship.
In this event, attendees will hear from Dr. Alan D. Roth, who will detail his experiences acquired over an extensive career combining academic research and teaching with three important business areas: investment management/capital markets, strategic consultancy, and emerging executive operations.
To provide an initial bridge across this gap, Dr Roth will introduce his views on a new enterprise based on scientific innovation. With some interactions and real business examples, he will present the essential components required for a start-up company and help listeners cultivate a business viewpoint and seek success from there.
Alan has been teaching a newly designed course at Oxford for all graduates – masters, DPhils and postdocs – which he has entitled “Scientific Entrepreneurship” which will be of interest for those who wish to continue learning beyond this “taster” event. He will hold this course again in the next academic year.

There will be a networking & drinks reception after the event.
The event is free as always. Spots are limited, so get registered today!
