Professor Martin Bushell completed a BSc (1996) and D. Phil (1999) in Biochemistry at the University of Sussex. He was then awarded a Wellcome Trust International Travelling Fellowship (2001-2005, Stanford University, USA). He then established his own laboratory at the University of Nottingham (2005-2010) and was awarded a BBSRC David Phillips Fellowship to investigate how gene expression is controlled at the level of translation particularly focusing on microRNAs.

Professor Bushell’s laboratory then moved and he became a Program Leader at the MRC Toxicology Unit in Leicester (2010), was also awarded an MRC Non-Clinical Senior Fellowship (2010-2015), and appointed Deputy Director of the Unit (2011-2018). In 2018 he moved his laboratory to the CRUK Beatson Institute in Glasgow, taking up a Senior Group Leader position and appointed Deputy Director of the Institute in 2022. His laboratory is now investigating how protein synthesis is controlled, regulated by cellular signalling and how it orchestrates programs of gene expression in the cancer environment.
