Towards a ‘Moderate’ MPI for ISDB countries: Indicators and methodological options
Abstract
The Global MPI captures the acute form of poverty. The 2030 SDGs agenda, however, sets out the objective to end all forms of poverty. Based on the numbers produced by the GMPI, the headcount ratio (percentage of people who are living in a poor household) is quite low. This implies that acute poverty measures including the GMPI do not capture moderate form of poverty. Alkire et al (2023) based on the data for only six countries have proposed a prototype of such Moderate MPI. In this article, the objective is to expand the MMPI approach to 12 Islamic Development Bank (ISDB) member countries. As an initial trial run, we selected four countries: Gabon, Iraq, Jordan, and Nigeria, and present results for different candidate measures across these countries.
