OxSID is delighted to host a talk by Professor Laura Rival on ‘what kinds of services are ecosystem services?’
Development economics has historically evolved with no or very little attention to the environment. Professor Rival will discuss the tensions which exist between economic development and environmental sustainability, including at international development. The talk will cover attempts since the UN Rio+20 conference in 2012 to counter the growing ecological crisis, worsening climate threats, and increasing paralysis of collective action globally.
Particular focus will be given to the concept of ‘ecosystem services’, which assess the relationship between human societies and their natural environments. Professor Rival will discuss how this concept may be used to build a sustainable and desirable economy in a society situated in nature.
The talk is free and open to all – see you there!
