The Edgar Wind Society for History of Art is pleased to invite you to a talk with artist and activist Caroline Coon on Thursday Week 4 (13th Feb) at 5.30pm in the Warrington Room, Harris Manchester College.

Caroline Coon has had a prolific career over the past 60 years from managing The Clash and designing iconic Punk artwork, to campaigning for the legalisation of drugs and prostitution. Through it all Coon has been an artist creating sensational paintings which have only recently begun to attract the attention and acclaim they deserve, with an exhibition last year at Peter Doig’s TRAMPS Gallery in London.

Coon is an artist whose vast body of work has spanned many subjects. From nude self-portraits to floral still lifes, from narrative scenes of sex work to images of hermaphroditic bodies, Coon has produced powerful images which explore and refute conventions of art history.

The talk will be a response to the words of Benjamin West, artist and second president of the Royal Academy of Art: “The same truth that guides the pen of the historian should govern the pencil of the artist.” Coon will be discussing how she has attempted to challenge the orthodox historical ‘truth’ in life and art, and is particularly keen for the event to be a discussion between artist and audience.
