Police Violence, Perceived Powerlessness, and Riots from Paris to Ferguson
Why does police violence sometimes trigger violent uprisings like those in Ferguson and Baltimore this year and much of France exactly ten years ago? Why have police killings only triggered nonviolent demonstrations in New York? Cathy Lisa Schneider will speak about the relationship between police violence and urban unrest, and discuss the changes that have increased levels of urban unrest in the United States, as well as the legacy of the 2005 riots in France.
