Modern capitalism has taken a surprising turn toward an unprecedented logic of accumulation: ‘surveillance capitalism’.
It features unexpected and often illegible mechanisms of extraction, commodification, and control that effectively exile persons from their own behaviour. Surveillance capitalism challenges democratic norms and departs in key ways from the centuries-long evolution of market capitalism.
Where does surveillance capitalism come from, and where is it going? What makes surveillance capitalists rich? Will surveillance capitalism be the dominant logic of accumulation in our time or an evolutionary dead-end in capitalism’s longer journey?
These questions initiate an urgent conversation. It’s time to begin.
