Food Security and Farm Laws in India

The protests against the Farm Laws in India have entered a crucial phase as the farmers’ agitation continues to gather mass and momentum across the country. There is widespread concern that the laws pave the way for increased corporatization of agricultural markets, leaving small-holder farmers at a disadvantage. The various perspectives can be difficult to navigate and in this session, our speakers will aim to clarify and highlight the key issues at stake. This includes important questions such as: How do the new laws affect the way in which India feeds its population? How might these laws transform the institutions and structures of Indian agriculture? Will the Farm Laws incentivise a new scale of mechanised agri-business which is feared to displace livelihoods and labour? Our speakers will discuss this and more at this webinar co-hosted by the Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development and Wolfson South Asia Research Cluster.
