How to fight inequality? A conversation
Reducing inequality has been a central international development concern for a long time and is one of the globally agreed Sustainable Development Goals. The damaging effects of social inequalities have now been acknowledged by governments, but inequality has continued to widen and has been supercharged by the Covid-19 crisis. Inequality is also driving other crises including environmental degradation and global warming.
What can we do to ensure that inequality is tackled? Which strategies have worked and which have not? What is the critical role we can each play in ensuring a redistribution of power and wealth? How can we shift values around wealth and redistribution?
In this roundtable, we bring Danish-Iranian entrepreneur Djaffar Shalchi, founder of Millionaires for Humanity, in conversation with Pilato, a Zambian rap artist and social activist, Ben Phillips, author of How to Fight Inequality and co-founder of the Fight Inequality Alliance, and Séverine Deneulin, Director of International Development at the Laudato Si’ Research Institute, Campion Hall, University of Oxford.
The conversation will be moderated by Diego Sánchez-Ancochea, Head of Department at the Oxford Department of International Development, and author of The Costs of Inequality in Latin America.
