In 1950 it was proposed that Britain join the European Coal and Steel Community, the precursor to the European Union. The then Labour Foreign Secretary, Ernest Bevin, said “If you open that Pandora’s Box, you never know what Trojan horses will jump out.” And so it has proved!
Professor Vernon Bogdanor CBE, who favours another referendum, is perhaps best known for having been David Cameron’s Politics tutor when he studied PPE at Brasenose, and for being one of the foremost experts on the British constitution. Professor Bogdanor is also Visiting Gresham Professor of Political History, a Fellow of the British Academy and an Emeritus Professor of Politics and Government at the University of Oxford.
He has been an adviser to a number of governments, including those of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Kosovo, Israel and Slovakia. His books, such as The New British Constitution, have featured on PPE reading lists. He is a frequent contributor to TV, radio and the press and graduated with a first-class PPE degree from The Queen’s College Oxford in 1964.
