Naked in the Water: Medieval Architecture and Jewish Purification Practices
As European cities laboured to replace wooden churches with larger stone ones after the first millennium, Jewish communities began a concurrent re-designing of their own public monuments. This lecture focuses on Jewish ritual baths from the 12th and 13th centuries. Built to facilitate physical and spiritual transformation, these unique structures offer a window into some of the biggest theological debates of the Middle Ages.
