2025 marks ten years since the Rhodes Must Fall Oxford movement began. At Race & Resistance, we will be dedicating space in our series across the year to the past, present, and future of the movement. This week will act as an opportunity to introduce those of you unfamiliar with the movement, and those of you who need a refresher, to its origins, motivations, and some of the discourse in 2015. The session will act as an opportunity for co-productive critical reflection, as well as a chance to ask questions and find out how you can support the movement as it enters its tenth year.
As such, we have some materials we would like you to consider before attending the session:
RMFO 2015 Founding Statement (included below)
Wake Up, Rise Up (Rhodes Must Fall), by A. Maluka (aka Andre Dallas), 2015
Oxford Union, ‘Must Rhodes Fall? Full Debate’, 21 January 2016 (www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3aBDBdDIgU). If you are unable to listen to the entire debate, we recommend the opening statements (2:00 – 22:57).
important note: Audience members ultimately voted that the statue should be removed, with 245 ayes to 212 noes
We do ask attendees to consider the chosen materials, however, we welcome anyone who is interested, regardless of the extent you have engaged with the materials. The discussion will be guided by your thoughts and opinions, however, we will also come prepared with prompts to spark conversation.
