OpenHeritage and the rescue of 170-175 High Street, Sunderland
This event will focus on the rescue of 170-175 High Street, Sunderland by the Tyne and Wear Building Preservation Trust as part of the Sunderland Heritage Action Zone. The project involved building a complex funding package linked to a series of culture and community end users, and in particular PopRecs, a music organisation, venue and community hub. The project was an important stimulus and catalyst for a historic but rundown area of Sunderland. It was also a “Collaborative Heritage Lab” in the EU Horizon 2020 project OpenHeritage, which sought to identify and test best practice of adaptive heritage reuse across Europe. Martin and John will reflect upon both the High Street West project and its place within OpenHeritage.
