Adaptation Urbanism: Rethinking Streets to Address Climate Change

This talk will delve into the book and concept of Adaptation Urbanism, which reimagines the role of streets and public spaces in the face of climate change. Streets occupy about 30% of cities and serve both as carbon generators due to automobility and public spaces that manage the flooding and other impacts of climate change. Cities are beginning to transform streets to adapt them to flooding while at the same time creating places that can shift travel towards less carbon-intensive modes. The book draws from a comprehensive analysis of leading coastal cities in Europe and North America, including Copenhagen, London, Miami, New Orleans and Rotterdam. The talk will highlight innovative designs that prioritize low-carbon transportation and integrate green and blue infrastructure to combat flooding and pollution. These changes not only address pressing climate policy goals but also enhance residents’ quality of life.
