What is the relationship between liberalism and conservatism in Chile, and how does this compare to other countries in Latin America and around the world?

Chilean historian Professor Lucia Santa Cruz joins Professor Tom Simpson as part of the series International Perspectives on Conservatism to discuss the meaning and history of Chilean conservatism and how this might be affected by the ‘new right’.

Professor Lucia Santa Cruz is a distinguished historian from Chile. Formerly Dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts at Adolfo Ibáñez University, she is a member of the Board of the Liberty and Development Institute and of the Chilean Academy of Social, Political, and Moral Sciences. Between 1973 and 1982 she was a professor of Modern Universal History at the Institute of History of the Catholic University of Chile. She received an MPhil in History from St Anthony’s College, Oxford, and a PhD (Honoris causa) from King’s College, University of London. She is the author of several books and publications, including La Igualdad Liberal (2018), a columnist for EL Mercurio, and has made frequent television and talk show appearances.
