Older people tend to be represented as a homogeneous group with similar needs. However, research indicates that those older people with the greatest social care needs are from the least privileged groups and tend to rely more on family-based and/or state care than their more affluent counterparts. This ‘conversation’ will look at how social class shapes the experience of old age, especially the need for, and access to, social care. It will also consider how other bases of inequality – such as gender and ethnicity – inform the quality of care received, and identify future lines of relevant research.
