Fireside Chat with Margaret Casely-Hayford: Face Into the Darkness in Our History

This event is open to all students, staff, and alumni of the University of Oxford. Pre-registration on Eventbrite is strongly recommended.

“In a brave new world, you wouldn’t call me out for asking you to listen to me and have compassion! You wouldn’t call me ‘woke’ for saying that identity matters; and I wouldn’t cancel out your arguments and say I’m not listening because you appear to be too radical.”

Join Oxford University International Relations Society, Oxford University Africa Society, and Oxford African and Caribbean Society for a fascinating talk with Dr Margaret Casely-Hayford (Somerville), lawyer and businesswoman active in the voluntary sector. Dr Casely-Hayford has been a non-executive member of the Board of the Co-op Group since 2016, and is a trustee of both the Radcliffe Trust and of Concert Theatre Works. She is an advisor to the Institute of Business Ethics and Chair of Shakespeare’s Globe, having served as Chancellor of Coventry University from 2017 to 2024.

Dr Casely-Hayford’s talk will be followed by an audience Q&A, during which she will answer questions concerning her family background as a granddaughter of J.E. Casely-Hayford (Ethiopia Unbound, 1911), her advocacy in creating diversity on boards, and her candidacy in the 2024 Oxford Chancellor Election.
