Local government has a long history of promoting public health. This includes children’s, housing, cultural, environmental and planning services, as well as specific public health and social care services. Investment in each of these areas has been cut over the past decade and cut most in the places where need is greatest, reversing the trend of the previous decade.

Whilst this was a disaster for many who rely on these services this natural experiment has enabled a greater understanding of the importance of investment in local government for public health. This talk will outline our research, over the past 10 years investigating the health impact of local government services and the implications for future strategies to reduce regional inequalities in England.
