OxonCourts Mini-Workshop on Legal Mobilization
Recent years have seen an increasing interest in legal mobilization – broadly speaking, the employment of judicial means to achieve political change, in particular by civil society. Legal mobilization seems to have become a commonplace instrument in the repertoire of many non-state actors, in fields as diverse as environmental policy, health care, employment discrimination or migration. Yet, the burgeoning scholarship also comes with conceptual and methodological challenges. What are the boundaries of the concept – is every NGO that goes to court engaging in legal mobilization? How can the conditions that foster legal mobilization and its success be identified empirically?

This small workshop is an opportunity for early-career researchers to discuss these questions and present their work on legal mobilization.

Our presenters are:
Virginia Passalacqua (Bocconi): From the EU with Love – The Mobilization of EU Free Movement Law in Defence of Marriage Migration in the UK
Jonas von Hoffmann (DPIR): Achieving Legal Marijuana through Legal Mobilization in Mexico
Fernanda Farina (CSLS): Access to Healthcare via Litigation in Brazil and Judicial Activism
