Strategy and Serendipity: Engaging with Energy Policy (OPEN Showcase 2022)
This session is for researchers and research support staff looking to develop skills in energy policy engagement and impact, including Early Career Researchers and DPhil students, although the strategies discussed may be relevant to those interested in other policy areas and from other disciplines. The presenters will draw on their own policy engagement experience in the energy space to offer practical tips and exercises to explore routes to impact, using principles that are applicable across all disciplines. Participants will have the option to work on examples from their own areas of work.
Research is conducted and produced with a view to long-term outcomes – and targeting and building effective relationships with the policy community is key to ensuring continuing input into decision-making processes. At the same time, policymakers must often react in real-time – sometimes with the implication that years of progress towards longer-term goals risk being overturned by short term policy ‘shocks’. This session will examine how research can inform and respond to all these processes. Refreshments will be available for participants throughout the workshop and the session will be followed by a networking lunch from 12:30-13:30.
Confirmed speakers include: – Anupama Sen, Head of Policy Engagement, Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment – Clare Downing, Centre Manager, CREDS – Kay Jenkinson, Knowledge Exchange Manager (Policy), CREDS
