Join us for our inaugural Black History Month lecture examining racism in academia.

The turbulence and discriminatory terrain of academia for Black and Minority Ethnic staff in academia is disorientating often causing psychological and physical fatigue.

In attempting to trace the contours of racism within the Academy and their detrimental effect upon staff of colour, this talk illuminates the importance of actively disrupting racism, particularly in the wake of a global shift towards engaging more in anti-racist endeavour. The violent and racialised battlefield of academia is a crossfire hurricane which requires all of us to take up collective arms in bringing such systemic discrimination to a ceasefire.

Dr Jason Arday is an Associate Professor in Sociology at Durham University in the Department of Sociology and the Deputy Executive Dean for People and Culture in the Faculty of Social Science and Health. He is a Visiting Research Fellow at The Ohio State University in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Jason holds Visiting Professorships at Coventry University, London Metropolitan University and Nelson Mandela University. He is a Trustee of the Runnymede Trust, the UK’s leading Race Equality Thinktank and the British Sociological Association (BSA). Jason sits on the Centre for Labour and Social Studies (CLASS) National Advisory Panel and the NHS Race and Health Observatory Academic Reference Group. Jason is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA).
