Lord David Trimble is a Nobel Peace Laureate and a former leader of the Ulster Unionist party. From 1998 to 2002, he was first minister of the Northern Ireland Assembly. In 2005, he won the Nobel Peace Prize together with John Hume. He was appointed to the House of Lords in 2006 and joined the Conservative partly shortly thereafter.
Sir Jonathan Phillips was political director of the Northern Ireland Office until 2005, when he became Permanent Secretary. As part of this, he supervised the peaceful transition of power to the Northern Ireland Executive.
Jonathan and David will be discussing one of the most momentous events in modern British politics: the Good Friday Agreement. Signed in 1998 following talks with representatives of republican and unionist parties, it brought to an end a long era of sectarian violence. David and Jonathan will be talking about the durability of the Good Friday Agreement and the degree to which it can be regarded as a model for conflict resolution elsewhere.
The event is free and open to all. The talk will be followed by a Q&A.
