Tilka Film Screening with Director
On Thursday, May 9th at 17:00, Oxford Syria Society will have a screening of an award-winning documentary that tells the story of five women navigating multiple crises in Lebanon. It will be followed by a Q&A with the producer, chaired by Professor Dawn Chatty.
More about the documentary, awards, and festivals:
TILKA is an intimate portrait of five women navigating multiple crises in Lebanon: prolonged economic collapse, a global pandemic, and the aftermath of the Beirut port blast. Najah, Tima, Rania, Fatima, and Fida meet in March 2021 for an artist’s residency in the mountains outside Beirut, coming together to create an original piece of theatre. As the country grapples with collapse, TILKA weaves together their individual stories with a collective story of displacement, motherhood, and hope told through the play.
TILKA won Best Local Documentary at the Lebanese Independent Film Festival and the Special Jury Mention from the Beirut International Women’s Film Festival. It has also been selected for the DOK Leipzig Film Market, AWAN (Arab Women Artists Now) Festival in London, and Migration Matters Festival in Sheffield.
