Histories of Solitude and Perplexity: Colombia, 19th to 21st Centuries

Ricardo López-Pedreros is Professor of History at Western Washington University. He is currently writing a biography of the Colombian sociologist Gabriel Restrepo. He is also working on a history of domination in Colombia during the second half of the twentieth century. He is the author of Makers of Democracy: A Transnational History of the Middle Classes in Colombia (Duke 2019) and co-editor of The Making of the Middle Class: Toward a Transnational History (Duke 2012) and The Middle Classes in Latin America (Routledge, 2022).

Lina Britto is an Associate Professor of History at Northwestern University. She is the author of Marijuana Boom: The Rise and Fall of Colombia’s First Drug Paradise (University of California Press, 2020), which was published in Spanish in 2022 by Crítica and Editorial Uniandes. She co-edited two edited volumes on histories of Colombia for Routledge’s Studies in the Histories on the Americas series. Recently, she participated in the second report of Colombia’s Historical Commission of the Armed Conflict and Its Victims, CHCV, coordinated by the Unit of Implementation of the Peace Accords. She’s working on her second monograph tentatively titled The Hippie Mafia: A Countercultural History of Drug Traffic in the Caribbean.

Ana María Otero-Cleves is a Lecturer in the History of Latin America at the University of York. She joined York 2023, having previously held the position of Associate Professor at Universidad de los Andes (Bogotá, Colombia). She is the author of Plebeian Consumers: Global Connections, Local Trade and Foreign Goods in Nineteenth-Century Colombia (Cambridge University Press, 2025), winner of the Toynbee First Book Manuscript Workshop Competition (2022). She’s working on her second monograph tentatively titled The Textiles She Bought: Microhistory, Historical Imagination, and Global Goods in Postemancipation Colombia. Otero-Cleves is also an enthusiastic public historian and co-founder of the public history initiative Historias para lo que Viene (Histories for what’s to come).
