Patience Schell studied history at the University of California, Berkeley before completing her DPhil in history at St Antony’s College, Oxford University. She then worked at Birkbeck College, University of London and the University of Manchester before starting at the University of Aberdeen in the autumn of 2012, where she is the Chair in Hispanic Studies. Her research has addressed the history of education, women’s history, social and cultural history, history of science and eugenics, history of museums and exploration in Latin America. She has published extensively on the history of the region, including her book The sociable sciences: Darwin and his contemporaries in Chile. Springer, 2013. Her current research, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, examines the 1853 Manual de urbanidad y buenas maneras by Manuel Antonio Carreño, which is likely the longest selling and most re-published book in Spanish.
