People of subcontinental heritage in Britain – ‘British Asians’ or ‘British South Asians’ have a shared history of family migration to the UK from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal. Historically they have much in common, and share many solidarities, but there are also significant political, economic and cultural differences between communities. Aimed at the non-specialist this talk will outline some of the key debates about – and between – British South Asians. As politics in the Indian subcontinent continues to create conflicts between British Asians, I’ll argue that understanding these differences matters for understanding modern Britain today.
