Join us for our first panel discussion of the new year, with Sue Lemos (Warwick), Carlie Pendleton (Goldsmiths), and Wasuk Sule-Pearce (West London), speaking on Black Queer Presence. This panel will consider Black Queer resistance, presence, and histories, as well as methodologies and praxis. Each scholar will present a short paper, and we will host a Q&A session towards the end of the session.
Title: We Have Always Been Here’: Queer Black In/Visibility in Late Twentieth Century Britain
Sue Lemos (she/they) is an ESRC funded PhD student in History at the University of Warwick. Their doctoral project seeks to illuminate the lives and politics of queer and trans Black people and people of colour in Britain, 1960s – 1990s. They received the inaugural Institute of Historical Research Olivette Otele Prize for their paper Queering Black Politics and the Warwick History MA Dissertation Prize for their research on the London Black Lesbian and Gay Centre (project), 1980s – 1990s. Prior to their PhD studies, they volunteered with the Young Historians Project and Haringey Vanguard Project.
Title: The choice is learn, Nothing much beyond size 14: Locating Fat Black Women in Queer British History
Carlie Pendleton (they/she) is a fat, white, genderqueer, pansexual historian. They are currently in the final year of their PhD at Goldsmiths, University of London, researching histories of fat queer activism in modern Britain. Their PhD is supervised by Dr Justin Bengry and Dr Erica Wald. They previously obtained their MA Queer History from Goldsmiths in 2020 and an MSt in British and European History from the University of Oxford in 2017. They are a Graduate Teaching Assistant at King’s College London, an Early Career Member of the Royal Historical Society, a Convenor for the IHR History of Sexuality Seminar, and a Junior Fellow in the Centre for Fat Liberation & Scholarship. Their research is funded by a doctoral studentship from the Consortium for the Humanities and the Arts South-east England (CHASE).

Wasuk Sule-Pearce (she/her) lives in London with her husband and four children aged 22 to 4. Three of whom are home-schooled. Wasuk was awarded the degree of Master of Management Accounting at BPP University. She later went to the School of Computing at the University of West London, where Wasuk was awarded the degree of Master of Science with a Distinction in Applied Project Management. She has since published eleven titles- Black Pupils Matter, a general readership book and ten children’s educational books on Africa. Wasuk’s PhD explores the lived experiences of Black LGBTQ+ students in Higher Education- UK, US, South Africa.
