Montenegro's path to EU membership: A catalyst for Western Balkan integration?
SEESOX KEYNOTE LECTURE
In this timely and thought-provoking lecture, the President of Montenegro will discuss the nation’s aspirations for European Union membership amidst the evolving dynamics of EU enlargement. As one of the front-runners among Western Balkan countries in accession negotiations, Montenegro plays a pivotal role in the region’s European integration narrative. The President will provide an in-depth analysis of Montenegro’s progress toward meeting EU accession criteria, including key reforms in governance, rule of law, economic sustainability, and environmental policy. He will also address the challenges Montenegro faces, such as regional stability, geopolitical pressures, and the necessity of building public consensus around the European project. Beyond Montenegro’s individual journey, the lecture will explore the broader implications of EU enlargement for the Western Balkans, a region of strategic significance to Europe. The President will examine how Montenegro’s preparation and alignment with EU standards set an example for neighboring countries and how a credible enlargement policy can bolster regional cooperation, economic growth, and democratic resilience. This lecture promises to offer valuable insights into the intersection of national efforts, regional aspirations, and the EU’s commitment to expansion, shedding light on what lies ahead for both Montenegro and the Western Balkans in their shared European future.
