Judeo-Cinema Nights

Judeo-Cinema Nights is a project to familiarise international audience at Oxford with the unique films created by Jewish people about their experiences, identities, and struggles, with special attention to less represented communities, such as the Jews of the MENA region, central and east Asia, and north and east Africa. It is hosted by The Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies.
Every term we will screen 3-4 films. Michaelmas 2024-25 will focus on the works of filmmaker and actress Ronit Elkabetz, who was an active mizrahi feminist of moroccan heritage, and often brought the issues faced by moroccan and Maghrebi Jews in nascent Israel into her films. This term we will screen the Trilogy of Viviane Amsalem, three movies which focus on issues such as kinship, religion, tradition, and gender.
